There has been no official word on whether or not Universal Studios will adapt the third book of the successful literary and film franchise "The Princess Diaries". With the huge success of the first two Garry Marshall directed films; The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, it is unlikely that Universal Studios and star Anne Hathaway would turn down another big payday.
In the first Princess Diaries, Anne Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a social misfit living in San Francisco. One day she find out that her father, whom she never knew, had passed away. Not only that, but it turns out that he had been the Prince of Genovia. This makes Mia the next in line to become Princess of Genovia. She then has to decide whether to continue living her normal life in San Francisco or to go and rule as Princess of Genovia. The movie is a lively comedy with Julie Andrews as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Mia's overbearing grandmother and Mia's misadventures in "Princess School."
As you can imagine, Mia chose to become the Princess in the first film and so the second film follows the now twenty-one year old Mia around Genovia. Meanwhile, Viscount Mabrey, played by John Rhys-Davies, finds a law that a princess cannot become Queen if she is not married and wants his son to be that husband. Her grandmother asks for one month for Mia to find a husband in order to be coronated. Things are complicated as Marbey asks the queen to allow his son to stay with them for that month which leads to the two becoming an item.
There are three Princess Diaries books and due to the vast success that the first two films had, it is likely that Universal Studios will soon greenlight the third movie.
